In news that stunned the political world, Mayor Daley of Chicago announced he would not be running for reelection in 2011 on September 6, 2010, effectively retiring from office after 21 years at the helm of Chicago politics. Daley had accumulated so much power over time in Chicago that he became the most powerful mayor in America, with a strong, historic political machine behind him and many referring to him as the city’s second “Mayor for Life” after his father, Richard J. Daley who served in the mayor’s office until his death in 1976 – triggering a 13 year interregnum.
